How TOsdays: Getting Motivated

As an independent contractor without much structure to my every day, I have taught myself to sit down and get sh*t done instead of wasting hours futzing away (though I do plenty of that when the work is done! It’s how I learn new stuff!).

Just recently, a friend was asking me for tips on how to get motivated, so I made a video. My core mantra has always been:

OBJECTS IN MOTION TEND TO STAY IN MOTION. OBJECTS AT REST TEND TO STAY AT REST.

I know this sounds familiar…because it is Newton’s law of motion. But repeating it to myself almost daily reminds me that I just need to get started in order to get…um…started. And I know what you are thinking, “But Tara, isn’t that the hardest part?”

Yep. Because those objects aren’t moving themselves!

So the secret is in the getting into motion. Here are my steps:

Step 1: clear all distractions. Eat. Go to the bathroom. Close the door to your office. Turn off FB, Twitter, etc.

Step 2: gather everything you need to get the task done. No more. No less. (don’t get distracted doing this)

Step 3: start simple. Go back a bit if the task is mid-way done so you can ramp up again.

Step 4: don’t let anything get in the way of you moving forward. Make sure you’ve cleared off more than enough time to really get into a task. If you think you are going to take 2 hours to do something, clear off 4 hours. You don’t want to be just getting into something, then have to leave.

Step 5: make it a routine. If it’s something you do daily, whether it’s a workout or client work blocks, your body will get used to that task.

I have some fun with it in the video, so watch! And subscribe!

Great advice, Tara! I especially loved your balanced approach on how to get started. Don’t rush headlong into things. Instead, take measured steps that ease you along until you get up to speed. You should also slow down to speed up, taking time to make sure you have what you need to get started. At the same time, you rightly warn against letting the preparation become a distraction. It’s so easy to confuse being busy with being effective!

Love the inertia point of view. I’d say having a ritual helps. I use headphones and a concentration app; I have a friend who literally puts on the tiara of productivity.
